Plans & devices

O2's plan shelf, its famously customer-friendly contract structure, and what Priority is actually worth.

What SIM plans does O2 offer?

Rolling monthly and fixed-term SIM plans across all the usual tiers up to unlimited, plus pay-as-you-go. O2 plans also carry access to Priority — the rewards platform with offers and early tickets at O2-branded venues. Honest rule: perks are worth something only if you'd use them; pick the network on coverage fit first.

How do O2's split contracts work — and why do people rate them?

O2 popularised the model where the phone and the airtime are separate agreements on one bill. Two genuine customer wins:

  • When the device is paid off, that part of the bill stops — no hidden forever-premium.
  • You can clear the device balance early and leave or upgrade without airtime penalties.

Longer device terms cut the monthly and stretch the commitment — compare term options on the official site on the day.

Does O2 support eSIM?

Yes, on compatible handsets, arranged through official O2 channels only. Travellers often pair an O2 line with a cheap local travel eSIM abroad. Number porting stays the free PAC text. Setup and security habits: eSIM guide.

Does O2 do home broadband?

Home broadband inside the group is Virgin Media — a cable/fibre network completely separate from mobile masts. Two takeaways: the group regularly rewards households taking both Virgin broadband and O2 mobile with data boosts or discounts (check current official offers before pricing either alone), and Virgin availability at your address is a separate question from O2 mast coverage — verify each on its own.

Data, roaming & costs

The speed question answered honestly, the roaming policy that keeps people loyal, and the fee structure.

Is O2 data slow? What do the tests say?

Independent speed testing has often placed O2's average 4G/5G speeds behind the fastest rivals, and slow data in busy city centres is the network's most-reported complaint pattern — a capacity issue its ongoing 5G build targets. Context matters: a strong O2 mast in a quiet town beats a swamped rival mast in a famous city. Test at your own postcode; never buy a national average.

What's special about O2 roaming?

O2 is the stand-out among the four physical networks: it kept inclusive EU roaming on standard plans after the UK's post-EU changes, subject to a fair-use data cap abroad (historically around 25GB — confirm the current figure officially). Beyond Europe, daily travel add-ons apply. For regular European travellers this single policy can outweigh every speed chart. Universal precautions: travel guide.

How are O2's fees structured? Why no prices here?

No pound figures in this hub — prices change too fast for third-party pages to stay honest. O2's structure:

  • Airtime fee monthly, with the pounds-and-pence rise disclosure required before signup since January 2025.
  • Device fee as a separate line that ends when the phone is paid.
  • Free spend cap — set it day one to contain out-of-allowance, premium-number and beyond-EU roaming charges.
  • Exit costs — airtime fee and device balance both disclosed automatically in your PAC/STAC text.

Apps, problems & verdict

Two apps with two different jobs, the honest glitch reasons, and where O2 wins and loses.

What do MyO2 and Priority actually do?

MyO2 runs the account: allowances, bills, spend caps, add-ons, roaming, eSIM, device-plan balance, support chat. Priority is the separate rewards app for offers and ticket presales. Both sit behind your own login — anyone offering to "unlock" Priority deals for you is phishing for that login. Official app stores only.

Why does O2 signal glitch sometimes?
  • City congestion — the classic O2 pattern: too many devices per cell at peak times in busy centres.
  • Planned mast work — check the official status page by postcode before troubleshooting your phone.
  • The 3G switch-off (2025) — old handsets and phones without 4G Calling enabled stumbled as it completed; enable VoLTE.
  • Your building — insulation and glazing cause most indoor dead spots; Wi-Fi Calling is the free cure.
What are the O2 satellite trials about?

In 2025–26 O2 began trialling satellite connectivity with Starlink, aiming to let ordinary phones send messages in rural "not-spots" with no mast coverage. It's promising and early-stage — not a coverage promise today, and a reliable fraud lure: nobody can "activate satellite on your account" for a fee. Capability arrives from the network itself or not at all.

I'm on Tesco Mobile / giffgaff / Sky — is this page about my network too?

Partly, yes. Those brands rent O2's masts, so O2's coverage, congestion patterns and mast works are theirs too. But support never is: every account, billing and SIM matter goes to your own brand's official customer service, not O2's. Brand-by-brand detail: budget brands section.

Where O2 is strong

  • Inclusive EU roaming — rare in this market
  • Split contracts that end when the phone is paid
  • Priority perks and venue presales
  • Satellite not-spot trials under way

Where O2 is weak

  • Average speeds often behind the fastest rivals
  • Urban congestion is a documented pattern
  • Perks mean nothing to non-users
  • Satellite remains a trial, not a promise
